I have seen this book all over my Instagram and Tiktok for months -- be honest, we all have -- and I’m one of those annoying people that doesn't like to jump on the bandwagon just because a book is trending. I bought a copy of this book on a whim and it's been sitting in my TBR pile for ages.
However, if you are like me and want to wait for the hype to die down – don’t. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was a brilliant read. Run, don't walk, to pick up a copy right now!
What's it about?
”Evelyn always leaves you hoping you’ll get just a little bit more. And she always denies you.”
Reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now? There is a connection between the two that will change one forever.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is, as the title suggests, about the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Seven husbands who are sometimes awful and sometimes sympathetic and sometimes somewhere in between. She retells the highs and lows of her life story, starting with her dream to go to LA in the 1950s, leaving show business in the 1980s, to present day.
My thoughts
This book was not what I expected it to be... it was so much more. It’s about a woman with drive and ambition, who is brave and flawed and messy. It’s about a woman who will do anything to get what she wants and everything she has to get through to get there. Mostly, it’s about love, complicated, pure and true. Evelyn Hugo truly is an iconic character and it was an absolute pleasure to read about her.
I don't think I'd like to see this turned into a film or series, but I'm sure it will happen at some point. Hopefully, whoever picks it up sticks to the source material and does Evelyn justice!
I know people that this has been a hit with, and others who couldn't stand it. What did you think of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo?
